Towards Urban Intervention in Old Dhaka, Bangladesh
PROJECT STATEMENT: Dhaka is more than a city. It has a vibrant nature and transforming character, and it is full of life and potential. The ancient part of Dhaka is more than 400 years old, bears memories, and is a witness of ages. But Old Dhaka is changing rapidly due to rapid urbanization and changing economic patterns.
SITE: Piary Das Road, Sutrapur, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
OBJECTIVES:
01. Revitalization of the street _Conservation
a. Preservation
Our objective for preservation is to protect the major architectural characteristics from further decay of the historical sites and continuation of such heritage into the newly built sites. The major architectural characteristics are scale, doors, windows, window screens, shading devices, cornices etc.
b. Rehabilitation
In order to rehabilitate this streetscape, the facade of the historic and old buildings is to be treated with utmost importance, and the functionalities may change or be developed according to the requirements and the protocol provided by the authority. Generally, adaptive reuses of certain cases are considered as a tool for further development of the according site.
02. Proposing Form-Based Code for further development
03. Promoting Tourism or heritage walks to the street.
04. Connecting the street life with the riverfront. _Intervention
