DEMOCRATIZING THE CITY
DESIGN OF PUBLIC OPEN SPACE OF DHAKA CITY IN BANGLADESH
PROJECT STATEMENT: This Project allowed us to work on a much bigger scale with a much more significant impact on the city fabric. The project aims to provide public open spaces in Dhaka where people can gather and voice their opinions to policymakers.
SITE: Old Airport, Tejgaon, Dhaka, Bangladesh
METHODOLOGY: Based on Matthew Carmona's six dimensions of public space design, the site was analyzed. An observation survey on the site at different times of the day, a questionnaire survey on the users, and interviews with relevant city authorities were conducted. For the design aesthetics, I studied urban patterns in depth to better merge our design with the context. Moreover, I assisted my groupmates in designing the public space based on the six dimensions suitable for politically active citizens and prepared computer-based visualizations.
